This is unreal:

This is a slowed down version of a song I love, Comfortable. I remember finding out about JM for the first time, driving along the Jersey turnpike one day in college. I knew he’d be the next big thing. I always dug him, naturally, but he’s kicked it up a notch in my music-world as of late, as one of my favorites, hands down. Here’s an example of why.

I love David Gray!

I can’t quite remember how I found Jessica Sonner, but I’m glad I did. She’s all too unknown, but shouldn’t be. Give her a try:

Tristan Prettyman is a Cali girl – kinda pop, kinda folky, kinda happy, kinda quirky, definitely enjoyable. Here’s a new single, Madly Madly Madly:

I went to Jimmy’s Brother, a Karaoke Southern style bar last night. We drank beer, hung out with our new friends, and enjoyed some ridiculous karaoke. Which was great, and then it was our turn (there were 4 of us) to sing. We wanted to do Walking in Memphis. I’ve done it karaoke before. In fact, it’s one of the very few I’ve been willing to sing somewhere other than in the shower.

Anyway, not only did they not have the song available, but the guy in charge a) didn’t know who sang it and b) hadn’t even heard of the song before!

Who in their right mind, particularly someone who does anything (whether it’s karaoke or something else) related to music, doesn’t know the answer to both a and b?

Slightly disappointing. We had to settle for Like a Virgin by Madonna. Eh.

Here’s the real deal for all of you who’ve been deprived thus far:

She’s got an angelic voice, like a Sarah McLaughlin, Patty Griffin, Rachael Davis, Nanci Griffith. She was born with an easy gift. Her songs are calm like the ocean and full of depth and emotion that literally grip you to tears. Give her a listen: One Moment More.

I couldn’t not post this. It’s my astrology reading for today. Go music!

You’ve got your own soundtrack today, even if you forget your iPod. Your good energy keeps a beat and melody humming in your brain throughout the day, making every interaction a little sweeter.

Since I mention her in the Shawn Mullins post and below that in another, here is a Lori McKenna example with one of her newer songs, How Romantic is That? She has, within the last few years, gone from mother of (5?) in her forties, releasing CD’s like The Kitchen Tapes, writing songs about racism and children, to having her song Fireflies be the title track of Faith Hill’s new album…called Fireflies. Love that song. Love playing it myself. Can’t blame Faith Hill one bit. And now, as I understand, Lori is on tour with her and Tim McGraw. She’s even been on Oprah. Didn’t I just see her in a little church in some random town in Massachusetts? Didn’t her tickets just cost $15 or less? Not so much anymore. She just became a big deal…which is great. I’ll always root for her to be heard.

Shawn Mullins

10Apr08

I saw Shawn Mullins last night at Joe’s Pub.

My good friend Paul once said something to me when he was living in Brooklyn last summer; that he wouldn’t NOT go to a concert(s) just because he couldn’t find someone that was interested to go with him. Considering his eclectic taste, and mine for that matter, and the fact that we are both pretty much on the same wavelength as far as being music-nuts is concerned, it stuck with me.

I’ll be honest – and I feel guilty about this – I am not sure if I lost the music “thing,” fell out of love with it for a few years, was uninspired, who knows what, but I haven’t been to too many shows since college. I dunno where the obsession went. The ones I have been to haven’t given me the magic feeling they used to. Even seeing Ellis Paul didn’t hit me like it did back when. Which to me is sad. Very sad. And I’ve been aware of this and I’ve been sensing the lack of…something…I mean music usually catapults (my) emotions quicker than just about anything. I guess the point in explaining this is that I am back. And like Paul taught me to do, I will do this on my own if I have to. I don’t quite care anymore. Either you’re with me or without me on this one:)

I am ready for this industry yet again…

So on that note, Shawn Mullins just blew me away with his performance last night. I am SO amazed at how simple his guitar playing is and how he basically just sticks to the first 3 frets with no apologies. He will play G, C9 and D over and over and over and over and skirt brilliant songs right around ‘em. He’ll pick perfectly. There’s not a single note he doesn’t take care of, is messy with, doesn’t respect. It’s like he’ll take the simplistic and make it sound more complicated. Like a great athlete makes their sport look easy. He does his guitar the same way. It was awesome to see that – and it makes me believe and be reminded that there are people like he and Lori McKenna out there who are songwriters first and musicians (guitar players) second. In that order, and they let you know it when they perform.

Shawn Mullins seems modest, thankful, and grateful to be doing what he does. He is absolutely worth a ticket. And way more than just the one hit Lullaby guy. He’s got a new CD called Honeydew, and many more to boot. Some amazing writing to “listen” to. Go go go. Here’s All in My Head:

I heard these boys (and girl) last night with Griffin House. They were an impressive surprise. Here’s their song, Darkest Secret.

Griffin House

08Apr08

I saw Griffin House at the Living Room in NYC last night. The Sons of William opened for him, then backed him up. Both GH and SOW put on greats sets. GH is just as humble and sweet on stage as I would have guessed. He seems absolutely normal and even shy. Anyway, he played many new songs, a few older ones, and ended it with this one here: The Way I Was Made, one of my favorites.

If I had the blogging-attention-span, I’d post VACO’s (Virginia Coalition) entire new album up on here…because it is just that good. This band has clogged my ears with goodness, from songs like Mason Dixon to Hurricane, to many others. Anyway, their newest CD, called Home This Year, is just off the hook. One could listen to the whole thing from start to finish without even flinching or saying, yikes where’d that come from? Or, what’re you boys doin’? So with that, there are a couple of stand-outs, one of them being Not Scared. I’m posting that here.

This is actually my aunt’s god son, Eric Hutchinson. I’m not sure what that makes me, relation-wise, but I do think he’s quite a talent, and it’s even cooler to know he’s only about a degree away. This is a purdddy one:)

Dear Chicago

28Mar08

Dear Chicago, sung by Ryan Adams. In my opinion, he is one of the most prolific songwriters of our time. This is a beautiful song, and he’s performing it at Red Rocks. Even better!

Antje playing Dandelion at Club Passim. Enough said. Hear her. She sounds like G-d. Let her voice do the speakin’.

I wanted to post I Love the Rain the Most, but there’s not a worthy version that I can find on YouTube, so here’s the next best thing: The City.

Here’s a cover that can’t go un-noticed. Mat Kearney and Griffin House — both incredible in their own right — do a cover of Tom Petty’s Learning to Fly during a show in Philly. Just kick-ass collaboration:)

This song, Such a Way, by Stephen Kellogg & the Sixers (with guest Kyle Riabko) is unbelievably beautiful. Please check it out. They, Stephen Kellogg & the Sixers, are perhaps one of the most underrated lyricists that exist today. Hehe, they’re on tour with Hanson at the moment. As proof. Or not.

I love this song, even though it gets a bit annoying after listening to it over and over again, as do many. However, I’ve recently revisited it and think it’s worth another go ’round. It’s pretty speedy and the kind of thing that makes you want to stick your head out of your sunroof when listening to:

Boyce Avenue

12Mar08

These boys are my new favorite un-signed find. They do a bunch of covers but have some originals as well. Have a 3 song EP available on itunes. Looking forward to a full length CD in the future. Until then, check out their YouTube songs:

I hate this question. I hate it on facebook. I hate it on myspace. I hate it when it’s asked on a date, or from a friend. It’s impossible to answer honestly. Whoever pins themselves into a solo category of tunes to listen to is pretty lame, as far as I am concerned. Not that it’s my job to judge a person’s personal preference (regarding anything) I guess I just don’t understand when someone says, eh, I like everything but x. All x sucks. I only listen to type x.

So why would I entitle my first entry with this question? Because I’d like it to be known right off the bat that this blog will include just about everything from Norah Jones to John Mayer, to Eva Cassidy, to Ellis Paul or Mark Erelli, or Boyce Avenue or the Rideaways. Hell, I might even mention the Bacon Brothers. Or covers by Faith Hill. Lori McKenna. Country to Classical to Folk to Rock, to kickass new sites/tech like Pandora or ReverbNation.

Keep your head up and ears out. Leave comments. Shoot me an email. Much love to music and particularly the 7th fret.
