Alright, I gotta be honest. I expected to a be a little bit disappointed by this album….
Luckily I wasn’t, but the reason I expected to be is that they did hit it “big” because of their kick-ass covers on YouTube. That’s how I found out about them to begin with. I almost wasn’t ready or willing to be ready for them, with their own songs and lyrics, to blow me away. Which, well, they’ve managed to do.
First thing is first – they start this album out RIGHT with the song Daylight, just a nice and slow guitar build, which quickly turns into a a series of rip-roaring drum hooks, smashing brilliantly to start off what’s to come and tells us what we can expect from the rest of the songs.
My favorite songs off this are More things to Say, Every Breath, Briane, and Hear Me Now. I would highly recommend a listen. The whole cd really comes together nicely – each song leading into the next quite well.
Check out Florida based band, Boyce Avenue!
I first found out (and apparently so did the rest of the world) about these three brothers (Alejandro, Fabian, and Daniel) when they blew up on YouTube not too long ago, with their sick acoustic covers of many popular songs – Disturbia, Apologize, Iris, etc. I am SO glad to announce that they have since released an original video for their first single “Every Breath” (available NOW on iTunes) off their major label debut album, “All We Have Left” (due June 15).
Check it out here:
They just finished up their European tour and are now about to take on the US (dates are up on MySpace/boyceavenue) so keep an eye out for a show near you! I know I will:)
I went to see Jon Sandler and The Fancy the other day (this past Friday) at The Bitter End. I’m glad he brought me there. Quite simply, he looks like a young boy, but sings and performs like the biggest man on earth. His vocals are beautiful – he hits high notes like you didn’t know existed. His ability to connect with the audience, while dancing about, belting as boldly as he can with his neck veins popping out for punctuation, was well timed and emotional. I am a hugely grateful fan. His lyrics were poetic, well written, and captivating. My only reservation after looking back on that show is that I left before grabbing his new CD that was being given out for free. However, this, this is worth a buy.

One evening, I was on my way out of my building and I found myself passing by a circle of people in the lobby hanging out for an annual happy hour meet-and-greet. When I came home later on, I saw a semi-circle of folks gathered around one of my neighbors, James Ruff, playing his HD-28 Martin (my favorite guitar) and singing one of his tunes. Apparently there’s an incredible musician with tons of talent living in my building, I thought to myself.
Long story short, James and I (and his gf Emily Sinnot, a beautifully talented Cello player and vocalist herself) have become quick friends. I’ve been working on James’ newsletter and helping do some research for him for an upcoming Fall Northwest Regional tour.
He just had his CD release show about 2 weeks ago at Rockwood Music Hall. One of his songs, Take My Hand, which can be found on YouTube is seen here:

This is a slowed down version of a song I love, Comfortable. I remember finding out about JM for the first time, driving along the Jersey turnpike one day in college. I knew he’d be the next big thing. I always dug him, naturally, but he’s kicked it up a notch in my music-world as of late, as one of my favorites, hands down. Here’s an example of why.
I love David Gray!
